Middleham Jewel: Ritual, Power, and Devotion |
This article discusses the interpretation of the Middleham Jewel, a mid 15th century amulet found in England near Middleham Castle. The amulet is made of gold, with a sapphire mounted on one face; both faces are illustrated and inscribed. It also contained a relic of some kind, now surviving as fragments of opus anglicanum. The jewel was worn at the neck and had an apotropaic purpose. |
